Players who lock down and control the midfield are vital in the beautiful game, and on the girls side in California there are plenty of players who do just that. Here is a look at five players who impact the midfield with their school and their club.
Scottlyn “Scottie” Antonucci, Attacking Midfielder, Class of 2026
Antonucci is a top, top player. Simply put. She is prodigious, driven, focused and incredibly gifted. She has been invited to the US Women’s National Youth Team camp in the past and for good reason. She plays with a high level of consistency where she shows up game in and game out, putting in a shift, showing off skills. She is a playmaker at the No. 10 position and makes smart decisions. She shows great vision, she adapts to what is in front of her, and her competitiveness will not allow defenders to get the best of her. She plays club with Legends FC.

Corona plays club at Legends FC, like Antonucci, and the 2027 graduate is another player who’s stock continues to rise. She played varsity on an excellent Santa Margarita team and played against Division I talent regularly, which only helped her improve. She already had a lot of ability, and she is getting better and starting to match her athleticism. She’s creative, smart and agile. She moves fluidly in the midfield, she takes defenders on and seems to see options far before others.

, Central Midfielder, Class of 2026
Correa grew into a role for her school, St. Francis, one of the top rated programs in the state, as well as her club, MVLA, a highly rated club. She shows coolness and calmness beyond her years as the sophomore seems to have a low heart rate. She finishes cooly, seems to find the right spots to be in when the team pushes forward and when she is on the ball, she distributes well and picks out passes smartly.
Leila Hawkins

, Defensive Midfielder, Class of 2025
Hawkins is a Columbia commit and the Del Oro High and San Juan SC player is very deserving of this distinction. She shows incredible awareness and game IQ. She understands the game at a very advanced level, and has no problem keeping up with the speed against better competition. She is crafty with the ball at her feet, and always calm when on the ball. As a No. 6, she led her high school team in assists. But she does not lose focus on the other end as she is a very strong defender. She is versatile as well, sometimes playing outside back.

, Attacking Midfielder, Class of 2027
Nguyen is incredibly strong and very brave. She is a 2027 grad, so she has growing to do, but she displays great strength for her size. She’s hard to knock off the ball, she shows fight and she will challenge for a ball and try to keep her team in the attacking third. She shows the ability to finish and distributes well. The Santa Margarita High player travels to San Diego to play club at SD Surf.
